Brief History
Gborho Ahmuyan Association Incorporated is a community-based organization in the
United States of America. It was organized in Providence, Rhode Island in 1994 by a
committed number of Gborho people. Now, the Association has grown in size and stature
as a non-profit organization, registered in the State of Delaware.
Gborho, from which Gborho Ahmuyan is derived, is an area comprising of several towns
in Grand Gedeh County, South Eastern Liberia. The Gborho people are decedents of
warriors and farmers who according to tradition, extend as far as Maryland County
and also they can be found in the Ivory Coast. The Gborho Grebos who took up residence
in present day Maryland County are decedents of the Gborhos. They referred to themselves
as Gborhos, and also called themselves Seaside Grebos. Most of the war dances as
practiced by the Gborhos of Maryland are similar to that practice by the Gborhos
who settled in Liberia and the Ivory Coast. The Gborhos are hard working people
who built towns. There are more Gborhos in the Ivory Coast than in Liberia.
Some of their towns in Liberia are, Bargblor Town, Gwein Town, Swaken, Tuzon,
Zaiyee Town, Zohnplee, etc. Gborho people pride themselves as providing the
first indigenous president of Liberia, Dr. Samuel K. Doe, who was brutally
murdered during the civil war. In Grand Gedeh County, particularly the
Gborho region was completely destroyed during the civil war and its
entire inhabitants fled into exile.
The need to resettle our people from the refugee camps around West Africa,
and to help rebuild shattered lives, gave rise to the formation of Gborho Ahmuyan,
which means “Gborhos moving forward for progress”. The Gborho people are progressive,
proud and determined individuals.
Mission
The objective of the Association is to promote unity and development that will
foster progress among Gborho people. Ahmuyan provides charitable social services
to members in the United States in the communities in which they live. The Association
also endeavors to advocate for development programs within the Gborho region, such as
education, health care, economic development and political education. It will also
strive to promote the welfare of the Gborho Area in Liberia through self-help projects
and undertake programs geared at providing educational assistance to the youths.
Ahmuyan believes that fostering basic health care needs and education is key to
comprehensive development of the region. The availability of health care and education
facilities would promote economic growth and bring about the gradual improving in the
livelihood of the people.
Ahmuyan therefore, is committed to defending the aspirations of all Gborho people both at home and in the Diaspora. Ahmuyan is determined to be in the vanguard to champion the pursuance of peace and national reconciliation currently taking place among Liberians.
